Council turns up the heat for primary school pupils

Pupils and staff at Yelvertoft Primary School can enjoy lessons in the comfort of warm classrooms while helping the environment thanks to an innovative new heating system.

A new biomass boiler at the school, which runs by the burning of renewable solid fuel like wood pellets, is the result of a collaboration between Northamptonshire County Council and the European Union’s Project ZECO2S.

It will save the school £1,000 each year and reduce its carbon emissions by 20 tonnes annually.

Cllr Michael Clarke, county council cabinet member for highways, transport and environment, said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to empower Yelvertoft Primary School to reduce its energy bills as well as its carbon footprint by helping with the installation of the biomass boiler as this is a real investment for the future.

“Today’s technology means that innovative solutions are available, which means energy bills can be cut while the environment benefits.

NCC is hoping to install biomass boilers at the primary schools in Crick and Pattishall before the end of the year.
